Mare Families

In the Schafer's breeding program the mare is just as importantant as the stud or more so. Even though the mares and stallions both add 50% of thier genetic make-up to the resulting colt the mare is the educator for the majority of thier first experiences. The mare will teach  her colts how to handle most situations directly or indirectly and we try to breed mares that have a certain disposition type beyond conformation, pedigree, and performance records. Pretty, well bred, athletic colts aren't much of an assset if they can't be ridden and used.
